Pea Island
I am back in the Outer Banks after a weeklong trip to Alabama and Illinois. It was a rather exhausting trip with daily shoots and teaching at a 5-day workshop. The most enjoyable part of these trips is the after hours, spent catching up with friends.
There is so much beauty in OBX that when I am here, I am continually faced with the dilemma of what to showcase from my photographic explorations. For those that have visited or vacationed here, it is a magical, as well as, historical piece of paradise. The island is known for it’s sunsets but since May 5, smoke from the Pains Bay fire in the Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge has filled the skies with a haze and masked the horizon. The sun sets into the smoke layer never truly disappearing in the horizon.
While out on one of my photo journeys, I traveled north to the sleepy fishing village of Wanchese and then back to Oregon Inlet. I found myself once again photographing two majestic icons of the island, the Bodie Lighthouse and the Pea Island Lifesaving Station. As luck would have it I found myself hiking around the dunes at Pea Island as the sun was setting. As magical as the setting is with the Lifesaving Station in the foreground, I could only imagine what it could have been without the haze.
From a historical perspective, Pea Island Lifesaving Station was originally commissioned on June 18, 1878 and decommissioned on March 18, 1947. Pea Island Lifesaving Station was the first life-saving station in the country to have an all-black crew, and it was the first in the nation to have a black man, Richard Etheridge, appointed as commanding officer on January 24, 1880.

Playing with Kites
On the Road Again!! Boarding passes, airline seats and peanuts are becoming a common theme but I will gladly take it over the alternative.
After a week in Huntsville it was back to paradise (OBX) and another week of living the reality of being a “beach bummed starving artist” at HWY 12 PhotoArts gallery (www.hwy12photoarts.com). If compliments were a tradable commodity I would be one wealthy individual. Instead my bank advisor told me that they do not take that form of currency.
The Outer Banks is one of those destinations that has so much to offer and so much to photograph. Every afternoon, I go chasing sunsets, a term coined for photographic excursions on the island no matter the time of day. When the wind is up there are always wind surfers and kite boarders to be found at one the many magical spots. I have been chasing an elusive shot of a kite boarder racing through the golden glow of a sunset but most quit right before that magical moment. It must be a “wind thang” I would guess.
I will continue to “chase sunsets” and that one elusive shot but until then, it just doesn’t get much better than this.

School Daze
Can you say, “Turn up the Heat!” I returned to Huntsville this week just in time to catch the 100-degree weather with a weeks worth of corporate shoots scheduled outside. To say the least, shooting outdoors for 4 days was brutal.
One of the most rewarding things for a photographer may very well be the opportunity to effect change in society with one photograph or a series of photographs. I had the absolute honor and privilege this week to be asked to participate in helping to begin to develop the campaign for “Village of Promise” with it’s grass roots here in Huntsville, Al. It was founded by a group of concerned citizens and businessmen and women determined to change the face of poverty and education in this community. The program is fashioned after Geoffrey Canada’s, Harlem Children’s’ Zone.
One of the thoughts for imagery was showing a child and what can happen to them with a failed educational system. As we were looking for locations at an abandoned school, we came across the entrance and there was a point of light streaming down on the stairs. For that very moment, it was the perfect spot and perfect location to tell the story. For more information on “Village of Promise” you can go to: http://promise.sewpmu.solidearth.com/
Whether this community or yours …. Educating our youth is the Key to the future for all of us!!! Many thanks to “Master Jack” for a fabulous acting job.
